FAQ

Here are some questions we often hear in the kitchen.

HOW MUCH COLOUR DO I USE?

Approximately 1-2 colour packets per 1 pint of frosting.

HOW DO I MIX THE COLOURS?

We recommend mixing the powders with a little water or glycerin before use, so they blend easily into your recipe. If blending a liquid recipe, or in a food processor, you may add the colour powders directly into the recipe after testing a small amount to ensure the colour will dissolve thoroughly. When working with heated recipes, like a gummy sweets, mix colours into a liquid first and then add into the cooling phase for maximum colour vibrancy.

Refresh powders instantly with a couple drops of water.

WHAT ARE YOUR COLOURS MADE FROM?

Our colours are sourced from the finest, most vibrant plant sources available. ColorKitchen colours from nature are made from simple ingredients, containing pigments from turmeric, spirulina, beet, radish, cabbage, and annatto.

WHY POWDER PIGMENTS, NOT LIQUID COLOURS?

Liquid food colours are in a glycerin base and have a very limited shelf life. Liquid natural colours can turn and fade within months. Our powder food colours have a very long shelf life, and keep a vibrancy that produces excellent quality colour results.

HOW DOES THE AMOUNT IN THE POWDER PACKETS COMPARE TO LIQUID FOOD COLOURS?

1 packet (2 g) is equal to about 0.75 oz. of liquid food coloring.

HOW ARE THE COLOURS MADE?

Aqueous extracts of the colour sources are spray-dried onto a carrier (maltodextrin), derived from a non-GMO corn. The aqueous extract removes the taste, smell, and fibers from the colors, leaving pure colour pigments.

WHAT IF I DON'T USE THE WHOLE PACKET?

No problem - just roll the open end of the packet and close with a paperclip or elastic band. The pink and red (Holiday) should also be kept in a plastic bag to keep them airtight - this prevents clumping.

WILL THE COLOURS WORK IN CHOCOLATE?

No, our colours are water-soluble and will mix well in icings and baked goods, as well as frostings and other oil based recipes when pre-mixed with a little water or glycerin. However, the colours will not disperse in chocolate.

ALLERGENS

While our products are GMO-free, gluten-free and vegan, they are manufactured in a facility that also processes nuts and other foods with allergens.

IS THE PALM OIL IN THE SPRINKLES SUSTAINABLY SOURCED?

Yes, the palm oil in our sprinkles is RSPO Sustainable Certified.
